Final Glide. Not long after sunrise, this American Avocet with wings and tail flared was just touching down in one of the shallow ponds at the Gilbert (Arizona) Water Ranch. Breakfast was about to be served.
The Gilbert Water Ranch (AKA the Gilbert Riparian Preserve) is a mecca for water birds and shore birds (and therefore birders and photographers too), but it also has another purpose: it is an aquifer recharge facility where treated surface wastewater is pumped underground to help replenish local aquifers that are being depleted by wells.
