Crested Butte, Colorado. This distinctive peak in the Elk Mountains dominates the East River Valley, and it towers above the eponymous town beneath it. It is a major tourist and skiing destination – the path of a ski lift is visible on the left slope in this photo. It is also one of the most scenic spots on the continent, as this image, captured as an early autumn storm was moving through, would attest.
