Ruins of Rhyolite. This scene might be a bit reminiscent of Grecian ruins, but it’s actually in the abandoned town of Rhyolite, Nevada, northeast of Death Valley. This once-thriving town was founded in 1905, and its population quickly grew to several thousand because of a gold rush in the surrounding Bullfrog Hills. But the glory was short lived. By 1911, the largest mine had closed, and the town was rapidly becoming a ghost town.
Many of the town’s structures were subsequently pilfered for their building materials, but what’s left has become a historic site managed by the Bureau of Land Management. On this morning, one of those famous atmospheric rivers from the Pacific was pouring stormy weather into the area, making the remnants of the bank and schoolhouse look particularly forlorn.
